Following a deadly accident and a string of incidents of varying severity, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) issued a strict warning to JAL on May 27, 2024. On June 11, 2024, as requested by the ministry, the airline submitted a plan with measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
JAL’s 21-page report includes emergency, near, and mid-term measures against preventing incidents similar to each of the five incidents highlighted in the warning including unauthorized runway crossing in Seattle, unauthorized stop bars crossing in San Diego and Fukuoka, wing clipping in Tokyo, and crew members’s unruly behavior in Dallas.
The most notable measure in the plan in addition to a variety of safety-related training and similar measures is a new company rule prohibiting crew members from drinking alcohol while on layovers.
