On May 10, 2024, JAL flight 312 from Fukuoka to Tokyo Haneda stopped behind the stop line in front of Fukuoka Airport’s runway, causing JAL flight 3595 to Matsuyama to abort its take-off. Because flight 312 did not enter the runway, the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) did not classify the incident as “serious.”
JAL flight 312 was operated by a Boeing 787-8 registered JA874J and had 166 passengers including three infants and 10 crew members (three pilots and seven flight attendants) on board. The aircraft departed from Fukuoka Airport’s parking spot 12R at 11:52AM and started going toward runway 34 for take-off. For an unknown reason, the aircraft turned right onto intersection E6 leading to runway 16 approximately halfway down its length.
Around the same time, the J-Air Embraer E170 registered JA214J operating the flight to Matsuyama on JAL’s behalf was about to take-off from runway 16 with 43 passengers and four crew members (two pilots and two flight attendants) onboard. With the JAL A350 being behind the stop line and thus too close to the runway, the E170 was instructed to abort its take-off by air traffic control.
The flight to Matsuyama was subsequently canceled as the aircraft would have to undergo an inspection. Subsequent flights schedule to be operated by the aircraft including JL3596 from Matsuyama to Fukuoka and JL3631 from Fukuoka to Miyazaki were canceled too.
Once the runway was clear, the A350 was instructed to enter the runway and exit it back onto the taxiway parallel to the runway through the next intersection, E7. It then took off from runway 34 at 12:26PM and arrived at Tokyo Haneda 17 minutes behind schedule, at 1:57PM.
The JCAB is investigating the reasons behind the incident.
