In April 2025, JAL and Garuda Indonesia will form a joint venture to optimize their combined network between Japan and Indonesia. The announcement, made on October 3, 2024, comes after the deal received the necessary approvals from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
While the two airlines already codeshare, the new joint venture will deepen their cooperation by allowing them share revenue and operate their flights between the two countries as a single entity. “JAL and Garuda aim to deliver more benefits to customers by providing additional flight choices, a larger network, better connections, and an enhanced frequent flyer program,” said the statement.
“This partnership signifies a major step towards strengthening the aviation ties between the two countries and aimed to expand our business presence and enhancing connectivity between Indonesia and Japan,” said Irfan Setiaputra, President and CEO of Garuda Indonesia.
Combined, the two airlines plan to up to four roundtrips between Japan and Indonesia during the coming winter schedule. JAL plans to operate 13 roundtrips a week between Tokyo Narita and Jakarta while Garuda Indonesia plans to operate a daily roundtrip each between Jakarta and Tokyo Haneda and between Denpasar and Narita. In addition to codesharing on these routes, the two airlines also codeshare on each other’s selected domestic routes.
Currently, ANA, which is working on forming a joint venture with Singapore Airlines, and Garuda Indonesia offer reciprocal benefits to their frequent flyer program members. At this point, it is unclear whether the joint venture between JAL and Garuda will affect that partnership.
