Kobe City is currently constructing a new terminal at Kobe Airport with the aim of expanding domestic capacity and enabling international flights. The new terminal will open on April 18, 2025, the city announced at a press conference on November 25, 2024.
Originally referred to as the “sub-terminal,” the new terminal official name was set to “Terminal 2,” with the existing terminal becoming “Terminal 1” once both are in operation. It is being constructed by a joint venture between Takenaka Corporation, Minato Construction, and TC Kobelco Real Estate Construction. Azusa Sekkei serves as the project’s architectural firm.
Completing the expansion work, which includes the addition of new parking spots to the existing 10 in addition to building the new terminal building, will allow the airport to increase its domestic capacity from 80 movements a day to 120. The new facilities will also allow the airport to handle international flights, starting with charter flights when the new terminal opens with plans to also allow scheduled international flights from around 2030.
Kobe Airport, opened in 2006, is currently primarily used by Skymark Airlines. Air Do, ANA, Fuji Dream Airlines, and Solaseed Air also operate domestic flights to the airport. The new terminal construction comes ahead of the Expo 2025, which will be held in the nearby Osaka from April 13 to October 13, 2025. So far, Korean Air and VietJet revealed plans to operate charter flights to Kobe once the terminal opens.
