Flight JL2154 from Aomori to Osaka Itami operated by a J-Air Embraer E170 registered JA216J encountered problems with its left-hand side engine during climb-out. The aircraft landed safely at Aomori about 50 minutes after it took off.
According to reports, the aircraft’s instruments indicated fire in the engine and the engine was vibrating and making unusual sounds while the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 11,000 feet approximately 30 miles south of Aomori Airport. As such, the crew declared an emergency and shut the affected engine down. Once the situation stabilized, the emergency declaration was withdrawn.
No fire or other damage was found on the GE CF34 engine’s exterior after the aircraft landed.
In total, 42 passengers and 5 crew members were onboard the 76-seater aircraft. No injuries were reported and the passengers were accommodated on later non-stop flights and on flights via Tokyo Haneda after their return to Aomori.
The incident comes less than two weeks after JAL submitted an incident prevention plan related to the airline’s previous string of incidents to Japan’s transport ministry.
