Fukuoka Airport’s new control tower will open on December 5, 2024, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) announced on November 27, 2024.

“The second runway at Fukuoka Airport is scheduled to open at the end of March 2025. In preparation for the operation of the two runways, a new control tower has been constructed to ensure visibility of the entire airport and its surrounding areas,” said MLIT‘s statement.

The new tower, built as part of the airport’s capacity expansion project which, in addition to a new runway and a new tower, also includes adding more gates to the airport’s international terminal, will be the second highest control tower in Japan. At 90.9 meters, it will be nearly three times as high as Fukuoka’s 31.4-meter current tower and approximately 25 meters shorter than Haneda Airport’s tower.

While earlier this month it was announced that the expanded international terminal will open on March 28, 2025, the exact opening date of the new runway has not been announced yet.
