In January 2024, United Airlines filed an application with the US Department of Transportation asking to be granted slots to operate daily Guam – Tokyo Haneda service. On February 14, 2024, the airline filed a motion asking the department to immediately approve the request.
In the motion, United says “no other carrier has filed an application for the returned nighttime slot and the time for answering United’s application has lapsed. Accordingly, United’s application is uncontested and may be granted immediately by the Department.”
Additionally, the airline argues that an immediate approval of the application will “ensure that this valuable asset will immediately be put to its highest and best use as soon as it becomes available on April 1, 2024” and that the application is “consistent with public interest as it will ensure that the traveling public can benefit from United’s Guam – Haneda service as soon as feasible.”
Should United be granted the slots, it will be the first airline to operate flights between Guam and Tokyo Haneda Airport. Currently, it connects the Pacific island with Tokyo Narita Airport multiple times a day.
