Amid its efforts to promote the use of hydrogen energy, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced it will support the development and commercialization of fuel cell airport ground support equipment.
As part of the “project to support early implementation of fuel cell mobility at airports,” Tokyo will cover eligible expenses related to modifying conventional into hydrogen-powered vehicles and test operations. Subsidy for the trial scheduled to run until March 31, 2026, was awarded to JALUX, JAL Group’s trading company.
JALUX tasked Tajima Motor Corporation with converting an aircraft tug that JAL will then use and JAL Airtech maintain throughout the pilot project duration.
Earlier this year, JAL also started using an electric tug capable of towing narrowbody jets, such as the Boeing 737, at Naha Airport.
