On September 10, 2024, at 10:07 a.m. local time, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A350-900 taxiing for departure as flight DL295 from Atlanta to Tokyo Haneda clipped off the tail of an Endeavor Air Bombardier CRJ-900 operating flight DL5526 to Lafayette that was taxiing for departure on an adjacent taxiway.
Shortly following the incident in which the wing of the A350 registered N503DN came into contact with the tail of the CRJ-900 registered N302PQ, Atlanta Airport announced on X that “two aircraft made contact at the intersection of taxiways E and H on the north airfield. No injuries are reported. Passengers from one aircraft are being bussed to concourse B; the other aircraft taxied on its own power to its gate. There is minimal impact to ops.”
According to Delta Air Lines, the Tokyo-bound flight had 221 passengers on board while the Lafayette-bound flight had 56 passengers on board. Both flights were canceled and passengers were rebooked on alternate flights. The airline said that “no additional operational adjustments are expected.”
The cause of the incident is not clear yet. “Delta’s TechOps teams have relocated the aircraft to maintenance hangars for evaluation,” said Delta’s statement. “Meanwhile, Delta is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board and other authorities as part of an investigation into the incident,” it continued.
Both DL295 and DL5526 are expected to operate as planned on September 11, 2024.
