Sendai Airport to double passenger security service charge from June 2024

Sendai Airport
While the vast majority of Sendai Airport’s movements are domestic, the airport also sees a limited number of international flights to destinations in Asia.

On May 21, 2024, Sendai Airport’s operator Sendai International Airport Co., Ltd. announced it will raise its passenger security service charge (PSSC) from the current 110 yen (0.70 USD) to 240 yen (1.55 USD). The revised charge, which is paid during booking, will apply to all international flights departing Sendai on tickets issued after June 1, 2024.

The PSSC covers baggage inspection and passenger security check-related expenses including equipment and staff. It is the same for adults and children over two years old. Infants under two years old are exempt from paying the charge and there is no PSSC for domestic departures.

In addition to the PSSC, both domestic and international passengers have to pay a passenger service facility charge (PSFC). For domestic flights, the PSFC is 290 yen (1.86 USD) for adults and children aged 12 and over, and 150 yen (0.96 USD) for children between three and 11 years old. For international flights, the PSFC is 700 yen (4.48 USD) for adults and children aged 12 and over, and 350 yen (2.24 USD) for children between two and 11 years old.

In FY2023 (April 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024), Sendai Airport served approximately 3.55 million passengers in total including 373,000 on international flights.
