On April 7, 2024, ANA flight 389’s ground proximity warning system (GPWS) was activated when approaching Yonago Airport. On April 19, 2024, the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) classified the incident as a serious incident.

The flight from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Yonago was operated by ANA’s subsidiary ANA Wings using a Boeing 737-800 registered JA69AN. A total of 138 people was onboard including 132 passengers (out of 166 available seats), four cabin crew members, and two pilots. No injuries were reported.

The flight left its departure gate at 8:09PM and took off from Haneda Airport’s runway 34R at 8:20PM.

On its first landing attempt at Yonago Airport around 9:24PM, the aircraft was approaching the runway at a wrong angle and so had to go around. During its second attempt, around 9:28PM, the aircraft started descending too early, causing the GPWS to be activated. On its third attempt, at 9:34PM, the aircraft landed safely on Yonago’s runway 07.

Incidents classified as serious are those where the likelihood of the situation possibly having resulted in an accident is high.
