
Tokyo Narita Airport’s operator Narita International Airport Corporation has partnered with Automagi, a Japanese company providing AI-powered image recognition technology, on a pilot project aimed at improving checked baggage management. Through the project, the airport hopes to decrease the number of lost bags and the workload of baggage handlers.
The system being tested links images of bags taken by, among others, CCTV cameras, to their standard barcode baggage tag data, providing an extra way for baggage to be tracked.
The pilot project is being conducted at Tokyo Narita’s Terminal 3, which is used by low-cost airlines including Jetstar Japan and Spring Airlines Japan. It remains to be seen whether it will later be rolled out elsewhere at the airport too.
