Narita traffic lags behind 2019, mainly due to fewer Japanese going abroad

In 2023, 32.7 million passengers used Tokyo Narita Airport. While the number still represents only 74% of 2019 traffic, it is more than double the number of passengers the airport processed in 2022. Breaking the number down further, international passengers arriving in Japan and passengers transiting to other international flights have recovered to 88% and 78% of 2019 levels respectively. However, Japanese passengers on international flights sat at just 44% of the 2019 figure. Domestic passengers slightly exceeded the 2019 level and, at 7.66 million, hit a record high.
