The construction of Nagoya Chubu Airport’s second runway is expected to start in fiscal 2025 (i.e. year starting on April 1, 2025), and last until fiscal 2027, the Ministry of Transport, Land, Infrastructure and Tourism’s fiscal 2027 budget request shows.
The new runway will be parallel with the airport’s currently sole runway 18/36 and located between that runway and the apron, where a taxiway parallel with the runway currently stands. At 3,290 by 45 meters, it will be shorter and narrower than the existing 3,500 by 60-meter runway.
“Early action is essential since no major repairs have been done on Chubu Airport’s runway since the airport opened due to its 24-hour operation leading to the runway’s deterioration,” the budget request said. “In fiscal 2025, we will proceed with the construction of an alternate runway with the aim of enabling continuous operations even during major repairs and achieving full 24-hour operation,” it continued.
In addition to serving as an alternate runway to the existing one, the new runway is also expected to increase the number of movements Chubu Airport can handle by approximately 20%.
For fiscal 2025, the ministry is requesting 900 million yen from account designated for aircraft development to provide to Chubu Airport’s operator Central Japan International Airport Co. through an interest-free loan and another 200 million to serve as a government guarantee for bonds to be issued the operator. The overall cost of the project is expected to be approximately 14 billion yen.
