Japan’s transport ministry to survey four airports for unexploded ordnance

Sendai Airport
Sendai is one of the four airports to be surveyed.

Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, which is a part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, will conduct magnetic surveys to detect potential unexploded ordnance at four government-managed airports where unexploded bombs were previously found, the bureau announced on November 6, 2024.

The four airports where surveys will be gradually conducted include Sendai, Matsuyama, Fukuoka, and Naha.

No specific timeline was given for the project.

The ministry’s decision comes following the explosion of an unexploded bomb under one of Miyazaki Airport’s taxiways on October 2, 2024. As there was no aircraft taxiing over the location at the time, the incident caused no injuries or damage beyond the damage to the taxiway.

Separately from conducting the magnetic surveys at airports under its management, the ministry will also work with locally-managed airports to prevent similar incidents from happening.
