Miyazaki Airport operations return to normal day after M7.1 earthquake

Miyazaki Airport
Miyazaki Airport is primarily served by domestic flights.

Yesterday, August 8, 2024, at 4:43 p.m., a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, briefly triggering tsunami advisories and triggering Japan’s first ever Nankai Trough megaquake advisory. Operations at Miyazaki Airport were disrupted for the rest of the day the earthquake struck, however, they have returned to normal since then.

Following the earthquake, one airborne flight, NH1155 from Osaka Itami, was diverted and landed in Fukuoka instead of Miyazaki. Several ANA, JAL, Solaseed Air, and Oriental Air Bridge flights to and from the airport were canceled, while others were delayed for two to three hours due to the runway being checked for damage.

The only flight canceled today as a result of the earthquake was ANA’s first flight of the day to Osaka Itami, NH502, due to the inbound flight last night having been canceled.

Yesterday’s earthquake is the second major earthquake this year to have disrupted airport operations in Japan. In early January 2024, an earthquake in the Hokuriku region briefly disrupted operations at multiple airports in the region and damaged runway at Noto Airport, which has been repaired since then, allowing ANA to resume its flights from Tokyo.
