In the early afternoon of January 19, 2024, a company surveying the seabed off Matsuyama Airport’s runway end which extends into the sea found a metal object believed to be an unexploded bomb. Japan Coast Guard described the object, found at a depth of about 25 meters, as old and rusty with seaweed and shells on it. The surveying was being done in preparation for the runway’s safety zone extension.
