On May 22, 2024, Komy, a Japanese manufacturer of mirrors for commercial and industrial uses announced it developed a new mirror for aircraft storage bins. The new product, “SPR,” promises to simplify weight reduction and inventory management.

The round mirror with a 95mm (3.75 inch) diameter weighs 9 grams (0.3 ounces). According to Komy, compared to its existing products, “the company has realized about 30% cost-cutting and weight reduction by reviewing materials and the manufacturing method.” Additionally, unlike its previous line of aircraft storage bin mirrors where multiple products were each suitable for a different type of bin, the SPR is universal. Depending on the mirror’s rotation, it works on either side of a storage bin.

Komy is based in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, and has manufactured mirrors for aircraft storage bins since 1997. Globally, over 100 airlines installed Komy mirrors in their overhead bins to simplify their cabin crews’ work, leading to smoother turnarounds. Earlier this year, the company was certified by Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau which is “expected to reduce the time and cost of documentation and applications required for airlines to adopt mirrors for aircraft.”
