Kansai Airports will offer wheelchair support service to passengers departing from and arriving at Osaka Kansai’s Terminal 1 from August 1, 2024, onward, the airport operator announced on July 30, 2024.

By doing so, Kansai Airport expects to lessen the burden on airlines and ground handling companies, which are facing staff shortages.

As part of the service, when an airline receives a request from a passenger requiring wheelchair, it will pass that request on to Kansai Airports. The company will then arrange the wheelchair, as well as the support staff required to assist the passenger.

“This service is the first of its kind by a Japanese airport operator,” said Kansai Airports.

The service will be offered between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., covering most flights using Terminal 1. It will cover assisting passengers requiring wheelchairs with getting from their check-in counter to their departure gate, from their arrival boarding bridge to their requested place within the terminal, and from their arrival boarding bridge to their departure gate in case of transfers.
