On April 1, 2024, JAL flight 774 from Melbourne to Tokyo encountered strong turbulence while descending toward Narita Airport, resulting in four injured crew members. The Japan Civil Aviation Bureau classified the situation as an accident.

The turbulence occurred around 3:30PM local time, at a time when the cabin crew was performing the pre-landing safety check. At the time, the Boeing 787-8 registered JA843J operating the flight, was descending through an altitude of approximately 17,000 feet and was flying over the Pacific Ocean, approximately 100 miles south of Tokyo. The flight had 157 people on board including 146 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots.

The aircraft landed safely on Narita Airport’s runway 34R at 4:07PM and reached its parking spot 93 just a couple of minutes later.

None of the passengers or pilots are reported to have suffered injuries. Of the eight flight attendants on board, four were injured. One of the injured flight attendants was later diagnosed with a fracture of the right leg.
