On February 29, 2024, Japan and the Czech Republic signed a bilateral air services agreement allowing for scheduled flights between the two countries and outlining the conditions for doing so.
For the agreement to come into effect, it will need to be approved by the parliament in each country, with each country being obliged to notify the other party of such approval. The agreement will then become effective on the first day of the third month following the receipt of the later of the two notifications.
Negotiation of the agreement started in July 2019 and was agreed to in principle in July 2023 at the agreement’s fourth round of negotiations. The signing took place in Tokyo with the two countries’ ministers of foreign affairs, Yoko Kamikawa for Japan and Jan Lipavsky for the Czech Republic, being the signatories.
While there have been charter flights between Tokyo and Prague in the past, this agreement will create the possibility of scheduled flights being launched in the future.
