Japan approves Korean Air-Asiana Airlines merger

The South Korean government announced its plans for a Korean Air-Asiana Airlines merger in November 2020. In November 2023, Japan filed an objection to the merger. However, today, January 31, 2024, the Japan Fair Trade Commission stated that it will not block the merger as it does not see any antitrust issues with the revised merger plan. The deal is still lacking the necessary approvals from the US and European Union authorities.
