From spring 2024, JAL will gradually expand its “JAL SMART AIRPORT” system to nine airports around Japan from the current five. The system allows passengers to scan their baggage tags after tagging them at the self-check-in machine to speed up the entire check-in process.
The plan to introduce the system was first announced in July 2019. It entered into service at Haneda Airport in December 2020. In June 2021, it was introduced at Sapporo New Chitose Airport. Osaka Itami Airport and Naha Airport followed in November 2021. Fukuoka, where “JAL SMART CITY” was introduced in March 2020, is the last airport to have introduced the system so far.
The four airports where JAL plans to roll out the system next include Nagoya Chubu, Oita, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima. Later on, it plans to introduce it to other airports around the country as well.
