JAL’s Beijing – Tokyo flight hit by sudden turbulence, flight attendant breaks rib

The flight was operated by a 787-9 registered JA863J.

JAL flight JL22 flying from Beijing Capital to Tokyo Haneda on September 4, 2024, encountered sudden turbulence just before 7 p.m. Japan time. With one of the flight attendants breaking a bone as a result, the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau classified the incident as an accident the following day.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 registered JA863J, had 121 passengers including one infant and 11 crew members including two pilots and nine flight attendants on board when the accident happened approximately 200km east of Seoul at 41,000 feet. The seatbelt signs were off at the time the aircraft experienced the unexpected jolt. Approximately 30 minutes after the turbulence, the flight landed at its intended destination, Tokyo Haneda.

One of the flight attendants went to the hospital for an examination after the flight and was diagnosed with a fractured right rib.

None of the remaining crew members and passengers were reported to have suffered injuries.
