In December 2023, Iberia announced plans to resume non-stop flights between Madrid and Tokyo Narita on October 27, 2024. Initially planned to be operated three times a week, it now appears that from the 2025 summer schedule, i.e., March 26, 2024, the frequency will be increased to four weekly.

With that, Iberia will connect Spain’s and Japan’s capitals as follows:

  • IB281 / Madrid – Tokyo Narita / 12:30PM – 9:55AM+1 / Mon, Thu, Sat, Sun
  • IB282 / Tokyo Narita – Madrid / 11:35AM – 8:35PM / Mon, Tue, Fri, Sun

Iberia will operate the route using Airbus A350-900 aircraft with 348 seats including 31 in business, 24 in premium economy, and 293 in economy class.

It will be the only airline to offer non-stop flights between the two countries.

Iberia relaunched the Madrid – Tokyo route using Airbus A330-200 aircraft in mid-October 2016. At the time the flights operated three times a week but the airline gradually increased the frequency with plans to turn them daily from June 2020. The plans did not materialize, though, as the route was suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic and has not been operating since then.

Before Iberia’s most recent service to Tokyo, the airline served the city from 1986 via Barcelona and Mumbai and from 1992 until 1998 non-stop.
