On May 7, 2024, Japan Airport Terminal, the operator of Tokyo Haneda Airport’s terminals, announced it started construction of the airport’s Terminal 1 extension. The terminal extension is expected to be completed in May 2026.

The hybrid wooden/steel terminal extension will be connected to the northern side of the existing terminal. It will have three floors with a total floor area of 21,000 square meters occupying an 11,000 square meter lot. The terminal extension will have six gates (presumably numbered 31 through 36 based on the visualization provided in the press release), each with a passenger boarding bridge.

Azusa Sekkei is responsible for the extension’s architectural design, Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei serves as a technical advisor, and Taisei Corporation is in charge of the construction itself.

The extension is part of a larger project to expand and renovate Terminal 1 which was first opened in September 1993. Once the new extension is open, work on the terminal’s existing facilities is expected to start.

Terminal 1 is currently used exclusively for domestic flights. In addition to all domestic JAL flights, all Skymark Airlines and Starflyer flights use the terminal too.
