The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the captain and sole survivor of the Japan Coast Guard Dash 8 crew involved in the January 2, 2024, collision at Haneda Airport told investigators “I heard the controller say ‘number one,’ read back the instructions, and entered the runway. I mistakenly thought I received a clearance [to enter the runway].” The Japan Transport Safety Board started interviewing the captain, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, on January 25, 2024, after he was moved to the hospital’s general ward.
