Kansai Airports, the operator of Osaka Kansai, Osaka Itami, and Kobe airports announced it will be trialing “Bird Sonic,” a bird control device aimed at reducing the occurrence of bird strikes, at the three airports it manages.

“Bird Sonic” was developed by T.M. WORKS, a Yamanashi-based auto parts manufacturer, and is based on the company’s similar device used for preventing birds from being killed on the road. The device emits high-frequency sound waves that cannot be heard by humans but repel birds up to a distance of 150 to 200 meters from the device.

The trial project will last one year from March 1, 2024, and is being done in conjunction with the Okayama University of Science.

Multiple other airports including Hagi-Iwami are already trialing the device.
