Both ANA and JAL were involved in Haneda Airport exam cheating.

Multiple media outlets reported ANA and JAL subsidiary employees cheated during an exam needed to drive within Tokyo Haneda Airport’s secure area. The employees are reported to have been allowed to have their textbooks open when taking the exam.

Such behavior was reported at JAL’s subsidiaries JAL Sky and JAL Royal Catering. Cheating is reported to have happened at four of 21 exams held by the former between May 2022 and January 2024 and involved nine exam takers and four supervisors. At the latter, cheating is reported to have happened at one of 12 exams held between October 2022 and January 2024 and involved two test takers and one supervisor.

NHK reported JAL apologized and said “we will work to prevent such acts from happening again as we consider this a violation of compliance and a serious act that could affect the safety of our operations.”

In the case of ANA, six exam takers and two supervisors employed by the airline directly are reported to have cheated in a similar way between August 2022 and February 2024. At the airline’s ANA Airport Services subsidiary, 72 exam takers and two supervisors are reported to have been involved in such scheme between February and December 2023.

ANA said “We deeply apologize for causing an incident that deviated from safety rules. We will work on preventing such a situation from happening again and on regaining trust.”
